Every voice deserves a microphone

Students in low-SES schools are among the least represented voices in Australian media. Many come from migrant and refugee backgrounds, Indigenous communities, or face barriers that limit access to digital tools and creative opportunities. These students often grow up unheard, their perspectives excluded from mainstream narratives, and their potential to lead public conversations left untapped.
According to the OECD and the Australian Digital Inclusion Index, students in low-SES schools are significantly less likely to have access to digital tools or media production opportunities. Over 1 in 5 lack adequate digital access, making it harder to build the communication, storytelling, and audio skills increasingly relevant in today's creative and tech industries.
The Future Voices Podcasting Program brings professional-grade podcasting gear, guided resources, and creative mentoring directly into these schools. Through hands-on learning, students build real-world skills in storytelling, script writing, interviewing, editing, and audio production. From setting up a mic to crafting a compelling narrative, they're not just learning to talk. They're learning to communicate with purpose, structure, and confidence.
Beyond self-expression, the program introduces pathways into sound engineering, media production, and content creation , industries where diverse voices are sorely needed. For many students, this is their first glimpse into careers in audio, broadcasting, journalism, or digital media. And for some, it'll be the spark that lights a lifelong passion.
Participating schools receive podcast starter kits, teacher-friendly lesson plans, and ongoing support to help students plan, record, and share their own episodes. By placing the tools of media into their hands, Future Voices empowers the next generation to be not just heard, but skilled, inspired, and future-ready.
